Dear Westnet Member

Welcome to November’s edition of the Westnet Newsletter!

It’s the time of year when I tell myself I should start planning for the festive season in advance – buy presents, make travel plans and organise gatherings at my house. Alas, I’ve come to accept that I probably won’t be kind to my future self and will indeed be tackling the lady next to me for the last chunk of blue cheese.

Since I’m not going to help myself, this edition includes a useful tip or two to make your life a little easier over the coming weeks. From playing your music through your TV to increased download quotas for some bundling plans – there’s something to help everyone. Not to mention the chance to win tickets to see brilliant family movies Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Where the Wild Things Are.

So relax, read up and enjoy!

More Quota for Your Buck!

Crankin' Up QuotasWe’re always on the lookout for new ways to stretch our members’ internet dollar a little bit further, so we’ve just bumped up monthly download quotas on selected bundled Broadband1 plans and bundled Broadband2+ Pro plans (excluding Broadband2+ Pro ULL plans).

The best bit? Members don’t have to do a thing for this to happen. No extra cash, no extra hassle – just the pleasure of a little more room to move on the net.

To make the whole deal even sweeter, we’re continually packing more into our already bustling Freezone. Westnet customers can enjoy unmetered access to content like the FOX SPORTS’ Barclays Premier League matches, downloads from Xbox LIVE, a huge range of programs available through ABC iView, Investec Super 14s Rugby games and purchases from the Australian Apple iTunes store… and there’s plenty more to come.

With all this extra quota, it really pays to bundle with Westnet.

Getting Your Music and Photos on TV

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Getting your music and photos on TVWith the warm-up to the silly season about to begin, it’s nice to be able to share your favourite music and pictures with friends and family. It’s really not hard to turn your personal MP3 player into a jukebox while you’re at home or even out and about. All you need is a TV, the right cables and maybe your TV manual to show you where everything is. If you’re ever unsure about which cables to buy, just ask your local electronics shop assistant to point you in the right direction.

Connecting your MP3 player to a digital TV

To do this you’ll need an AV cable, which will give you audio and video output from your television, enabling you to listen to music, play videos or view pictures. Keep in mind that some MP3 players may require brand-specific breakout cables to be connected to a TV.

Connecting your MP3 player to an analogue TV

RCA connections on your analogue box make it possible for you to connect your MP3 player to your TV. An RCA connection is made up of a yellow port (video), a red port (audio right) and a white port (audio left). Sometimes there are just the two ports for audio.

To connect your MP3 to your analogue TV, you’ll need to buy a cable with a single plug at one end and the appropriate number of RCA plugs at the other end. Generally these are 3.5mm (headphone jack size) to 3RCA or 2RCA cables. If your system only has two RCA ports, you won’t be able to view video but you’ll still be able to enjoy music.

Westnet’s Got Game!

We’ve recently stripped it back, given it a new skin, improved forum and commenting functionality and made it more user-friendly, but many of you are probably still baffled about why 3FL, and indeed online gaming in general, are so popular nowadays.

Put simply, 3FL gives people a chance to become a character, interact with friends or strangers from the comfort of their home and be generally entertained by the new and creative concepts gaming developers keep churning out. It’s more interactive that watching a movie and cheaper than going out to your local pub.

With highly interactive and popular games like Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead, 3FL gives players the opportunity to battle zombies or plough through enemy defences using clever tactics whenever they feel the urge.

On top of this, gamers can now watch Playr, a TV show all about gaming, on the 3FL site to get their extra online gaming fix.

Gaming with Westnet’s 3FL just got better, so go on – become one of us.

WIN Passes to see Cloudy with a Chance of MeatballsWestnet and Sony Pictures are giving members the chance to win one of 25 in-season double passes to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, a hilarious adventure of epic… portion sizes.

Aspiring inventor Flint Lockwood is the socially awkward genius behind some of the most bizarre contraptions ever conceived.  But even though all of his inventions, from spray-on shoes to a monkey thought translator, have been spectacular failures that caused trouble in his small town, Flint is determined to create something that will make people happy. When Flint’s latest machine, designed to turn water into food, accidentally destroys the town square and rockets up into the clouds, he thinks his inventing career is over.  Until something amazing happens – cheeseburgers start raining from the sky.  His machine actually works!

The food weather is an instant success, and Flint forges a fast friendship with Sam Sparks, the weathergirl who comes to town to cover what she calls “the greatest weather phenomenon in history.”  But when people greedily ask for more and more food, the machine starts behaving erratically, unleashing spaghetti tornadoes and giant meatballs. With the town about to be buried beneath mountains of marshmallows and waves of watermelons, it’s up to Flint and Sam to use their combined expertise to shut down the machine and put everything right.
